As a business psychologist I work to develop leaders and organisations. After gaining 11 years classical Human Resources and Organisational Development experience with organisations in the private (SABMiller, Haygroup management consultancy, VWV Pty Ltd, YSC Business psychologists) and public sectors (SARS), multinational and national, I have realised that the critical ingredient and what is lacking from many South African organisations and the country as a whole are “Great Leaders”.
Building leadership in Africa is a particular passion of mine which has sparked off an interest in wanting to answer some of those fundamental questions about African leaders that textbooks, research papers or experience fail to answer. This enquiry has led me to delve a bit deeper by doing a South African leadership study. The study was sponsored by McDonalds SA and provides insight into another project with McDonalds involving the development of a Leadership Academy centered on action learning and coaching.
The assessment and coaching work that I do is multi-sphered: on an individual level; group level, and at the organizational/ business level. In this way we ensure that the individual is not “coached” in the absence of their context but rather that shifts happen at all levels.
Having a Masters Degree in Industrial Psychology, being a registered Industrial Psychologist with the HPCSA and registered COMENSA Coach and having held various HR and OD portfolios, certainly does not ‘qualify’ one to have all the answers about what makes for an effective organization or great leadership – it is my drive to make a difference by “serving” emerging leaders to step into their full potential and realise their power that does.
